Social Club

With wonderful energy and co-operation, the Reading Room had been re-built (a story told in another section of this website) and by the end of 1999 the villagers could enjoy their social events in their new building.  The Inaugural Meeting of the Social Club was held on 4th November.  There was no agenda, as the Club was new!  Officers and committee members were elected.  The Minutes of the committee meetings from that time are not that different from the ones from the present time, and although some of the committee members have moved on, others are still involved in running and supporting the Social Club today.

The annual membership fee for the Social Club is £8 per year, per person.   The money goes towards supporting the social events and paying the annual fee to the Management Committee, the charitable organisation which owns and looks after the Reading Room.

Social and fundraising events over the years have included treasure hunts, sales, talks, a beer tasting evening, a magician, a casino night and even an Antiques Valuation Evening;  most of these events include food of some sort, a big feature of Burgh social life.

For a few years, we had a Film Club, showing some less well-known films, accompanied by popcorn and serving ice creams in the interval.  In 2010 we had a Christmas pantomime, Cinderella, written and produced by a villager.  Lots of the village children were in the cast, plus of course two of the best Ugly Sisters ever!  There was a part for everyone who wanted to join in.  It was a huge success with a dress rehearsal one evening and then one spectacular performance, complete with lights and music, for a sell-out audience the next.

Now, in 2023, the Social Club helps to keep the village a really friendly place to live.  It gives people a chance to chat, and to get to know each other.  During the warmer months, the Social Club runs a barbecue every Friday night, with a choice of beef or pork burgers, sausages or vegetarian burgers and sausages.  The work is shared, and members sign up to do the cooking and serving for one or two barbecue evenings each season.

The bar opens through the winter once every two weeks on a Friday evening from 7.30 - 10.00.  Winter social events have included a Hallowe'en dance with food and live music, a quiz with shared food,  a social evening putting up the Christmas decorations, a pre-Christmas party with bring-and-share food, the annual Bingo night, with fish and chips brought in and a curry night, with food made by two people in the village.
